The Helvecios, were a Celtic tribe who inhabited the south of Germania, and pressured by the Germanic Cimbris that invaded their lands, emigrated there to Switzerland. They were famous for their riches in gold that they extracted from the sands of the Rhine. They occupied the Swiss plateau, of wide valleys and lawn, dedicated to agriculture and livestock. In 58 BC they were pushed out once again by the Swabian Germanic tribes, they marched towards the East and penetrated the Belgian Gauls. Within the campaigns of the Gauls, Julius Caesar defeated them in the battle of Bribacte and he made them retreat. But, instead of massacring them, he granted them the federal statue of foederati, village allied with Rome.

In 15 BC Tiberio and Druso conquered the Alps, a progressive and intense Romanisation begins. The importance of Helvetia and Raetia resides in its strategic quality as crossing site towards Limes Rhine and the Gauls. The zone is essential from the military and also commercial point of view. The Romans take care to maintain clear and protect the passages of the Alps, colonies in different points of the Swiss plateau especially next to the Lagos create a way to facilitate the transportation of merchandise and they construct an excellent road network to unite them to each other. The Celtic aristocracy conserves its privileges and is integrated within the local governments.  Their polytheistic religion is assimilated with the Roman religion and although the official language is Latin, the Celtic dialect is tolerated and they continue to speak it. All this favors a time of peace and prosperity under pax Romana that will last until 260 AD the German invasions of and the destruction and looting of the main cities. Converted back into a border zone, during the next hundred years Helvetia is reinforced with lines of defense of castles and watchtowers but their main cities are left and the population moves towards the south, looking for safer places. The ruins of Nyon and Aventicum are used in the construction of the defenses of Augusta Raurica and Geneva (Geneva)
